Behind the music:

Le Gibet is the second piece in Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit, written in 1908. Inspired by a poem from Aloysius Bertrand, it paints a haunting image of a hanged man swaying in the desert at sunset. The music repeats a single B-flat throughout, like a distant bell. Ravel aimed to create stillness and tension rather than melody. It’s one of his most atmospheric and technically challenging piano works.
