Behind the music:
Franz Schubert’s Wiegenlied (D 498) is a gentle lullaby composed in 1816. It’s often known by its opening line, “Schlafe, schlafe, holder süßer Knabe” (“Sleep, sleep, gentle sweet boy”). The melody is simple and calming, designed to soothe a child to sleep. While often mistaken for a folk song, it was written by Schubert himself. The lyrics are traditionally attributed to an anonymous poet.
