Bach’s Prelude BWV 639 is part of the Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection he wrote while in Weimar around 1714. The piece is based on the hymn “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ” and is often described as a musical prayer. Its slow, flowing melody is supported by steady accompaniment, giving it a deeply meditative character. Many believe Bach intended it for teaching as well as worship, showing how simplicity can carry profound emotion. Today it is frequently performed both on organ and in piano arrangements.
