Behind the music:
“Carolina Shout” (ca. 1918) is one of the first true stride-piano pieces, written by James P. Johnson, the pioneer who bridged ragtime and early jazz. The left hand jumps between bass notes and chords, creating that driving “stride” feel that later shaped Fats Waller and even early swing. Its fast runs and syncopation made it a test piece for Harlem pianists. The tune marked a shift from ragtime’s more fixed patterns to a looser, more improvisational piano style. Today it’s seen as a milestone that defined the sound of 1910s–20s piano jazz.
