Behind the chant:

Gregorian chant is one of the oldest forms of Western sacred music, developed in early medieval Europe and named after Pope Gregory I. It is monophonic, meaning it uses a single melodic line without harmony or rhythm in the modern sense. The melodies follow the natural flow of Latin liturgical texts, making the words central rather than the music itself. Chant was originally sung unaccompanied by choirs of monks or clerics in churches and monasteries. Its free rhythm and limited pitch range were designed to support prayer, reflection, and clarity of text.
