Behind the music:
“Danny Boy” is set to the traditional Irish melody Londonderry Air, collected in the mid-19th century in Northern Ireland. The lyrics were written in 1913 by English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly. Though often associated with themes of emigration and loss, it has become a universal song of farewell and remembrance. It gained popularity during World War I and remains a staple at funerals, memorials, and Irish cultural events. Today it is one of the most recognized Irish songs worldwide.
