“Die Moldau,” composed by Bedřich Smetana in 1874, is part of his symphonic cycle Má vlast (My Country). The piece musically depicts the journey of the Vltava River through the Bohemian landscape, capturing the river’s flow, various landscapes, and scenes along its path. Through its contrasting themes and rhythms, it transitions from calm, peaceful waters to powerful, rushing torrents. The orchestration includes distinctive use of woodwinds, strings, and brass, which convey the river’s diverse character. Die Moldau remains one of Smetana’s most celebrated works, embodying Czech national identity.
