Behind the music:

Inspired by a grotesque nutcracker design by artist Viktor Hartmann, Modest Mussorgsky composed “Gnomus” as part of Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874. The piece portrays a twisted, limping gnome moving unpredictably through sudden tempo changes, sharp dissonance, and eerie contrasts. Its chaotic structure was highly unusual for its time and helped shape later horror and dark fantasy music styles. Maurice Ravel’s famous orchestration later introduced the work to a wider audience, especially through dramatic orchestral performances.
