Behind the music:

“House of the Rising Sun” is one of the oldest surviving American folk songs, passed down orally long before it was recorded. The story likely refers to a troubled life in New Orleans, warning about gambling houses or brothels in the 1800s. Early Appalachian singers shaped the melody over generations, which is why many slightly different versions exist. In the 1930s the song was finally recorded, preserving a tradition that had already lived for decades. Its haunting minor melody is a classic example of storytelling in American folk music.
