The Oud is a fretless ancestor of many modern lutes, built to let fingers move freely between notes without hitting fixed semitone steps. With 11 or 12 strings tuned in paired courses, players shape the sound using slides, bends, and micro-tones that are key to maqam music. The floating bridge and rounded wooden body give quick response and clear, short decay for decorated phrases. Traditional makers like Nahat Brothers refined the design that many artists still copy today. Icons such as Farid al‑Atrash showed how the oud speaks most through tone, timing, and feeling, not chords.
