Disco music emerged in the early 1970s from Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ club scenes in cities like New York and Philadelphia. It blended funk, soul, and Latin rhythms with a steady four-on-the-floor beat designed for long nights of dancing. DJs played extended mixes so dancers could stay on the floor without breaks. Disco also pushed studio innovation, using live strings, brass sections, and tight rhythm sections to create a polished, energetic sound. By the late 1970s, disco had shaped pop music worldwide and influenced modern dance genres that followed.
