“Mary Had a Little Lamb” is one of the oldest and most recognized children’s songs, first published in 1830. The lyrics were inspired by a real girl, Mary Sawyer, whose pet lamb followed her to school in Sterling, Massachusetts. The melody we know today was later added by Lowell Mason.
