Behind the music:

Radetzky March was composed in 1848 by Johann Strauss I to honor Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky after his victory at the Battle of Custoza. It was written during a year of political unrest across Europe and quickly became popular with both soldiers and civilians. The march’s strong rhythm and clear structure made it ideal for public celebrations and military parades. Today it is best known as the traditional closing piece of the Vienna New Year’s Concert, where audience clapping follows long-standing custom.
